THOUGHTS: Sisters.... now there is a relationship that only sisters can know. There is a closeness that no one, but a sister can feel. There is a love that no one, but a sister can know. Sisters are so very different, but so very close at the same time. It is a relationship to hold dear, as when it is gone the void cannot be filled......

THOUGHTS: I mentioned before what a wonderful cook my mother was. Well, my father loved my mother’s cooking. She used to bake a lot and especially before a big occasion. Once, my mother made several pies for some big celebration and she hid them around the kitchen to keep my father out of them. The celebration came and went and several weeks later my father was sniffing around the kitchen looking for something good to eat. He found a pie and couldn’t have been happier. My mother came home and by that time my father had already eaten half of the pie. She asked him where he got the pie and he told her he found it in the back of a cupboard. She asked him if it tasted good and he responded that it was delicious. She then told him how old the pie was and it was not fit to eat. So, upon closer examination, my father found the pie was indeed covered with a fuzzy coating of mold. Luckily, my father had a stomach of iron and never got sick from it, but we all had a good laugh.

THOUGHTS: My mother was an excellent cook and made everything from scratch. Most kids would appreciate this, but my sister and I were not as impressed. We thought it was so cool that the rich kids got to have the really soft white bread, little tiny bags of potato chips and twinkies in their lunches while we were stuck eating sandwiches made on homemade bread with fresh fruit and homemade desserts. When my father got a better job and we had to move to a neighboring town and leave all of our friends, I asked my Mom if Dad would make enough money so we could have a twinkie instead of homemade cookies in our lunches.....what I would give for one of those wonderful home cooked lunches now, I had no idea just really how good I had it.

THOUGHTS: My father had an aunt that was from the old country, Italy. He so loved her ravioli and every time he would visit her, he would beg her to make her famous chicken ravioli. Well, one time when he did this (still just a small child of maybe 6), she told him he was now old enough to go out and kill the chickens and she would make him chicken ravioli. She told him to just grab the chicken by the head, put it over his head and swing his arm and this would snap the chicken’s neck. Well, I believe I mentioned before that my father was a very large man, he went out back and got himself a chicken and did just what she said only he spun the chicken round and round until its body flew off. Thinking this is what his aunt meant by breaking its neck, he repeated it again with another chicken. Then went off into the field to find the chickens he had killed. They actually flew pretty far due to his great strength in a little boy, but he was happy when he found them both and returned them to his aunt with anticipation of the coming ravioli. He went outside to play for the day while the meal was made. When it came time to sit down and enjoy the meal, his aunt asked him what he had done to those poor chickens. She said they were not fit to eat as they were black and blue all over.... once again, a story the family has loved for years.....

THOUGHTS: When my father was a child during the depression, he so wanted a pair of roller skates. They lived in San Francisco at the time. Christmas came and sure enough he got a prized pair of roller skates. So, he climbed to the top of one of San Francisco’s famous hills, donned his roller skates with the shiny metal wheels and set off. By the time he reached the bottom of the hill, there was no wheel left. He had ground them completely down to nothing on his long and only ride down the hill.

THOUGHTS: My father, who was also an artist, felt that most things could be fixed with a good coat of paint. Once he and my mother were going to Victoria to quite a fancy dress up affair. My father was a large man and he only had one pair of work shoes and one pair of dress shoes. If he needed a pair of shoes it was a real task as most stores did not carry his size. Anyway, it was time to attend the affair and his dress shoes were rather shabby. So, the morning of the big event he decided that a good coat of black paint would make them look just dandy since the shoe polish had not done the trick. It came time to leave and his shoes were still not dry, but he wasn’t worried since they looked so good and the ferry ride would afford him another couple of hours of drying time. They crossed the ferry and then walked to the fancy Empress Hotel where the affair was to take place. They crossed over the massive lawn on their way to the door. When they arrived at the door my father looked down and he noticed that they must have just mowed the lawn, as his snazzy black shoes looked more like fuzzy green slippers and they stayed that way as the grass was firmly embedded in the good coat of paint......luckily my father had a great sense of humor and was able to still enjoy the evening.

THOUGHTS: This year we had over 400 trick or treaters. The thing that makes this year stand out for me was that they were the nicest 400 children I have ever encountered in such a short amount of time. Everyone of them said thank you and lots of smiles and "Happy Halloweens" from the children. It didn’t seem to matter if they were 2 or 15, they were the nicest group of children to visit our home in years. I must say Port Townsend has produced a wonderful generation of happy upcoming adults with great manners and this is not always evident in this day and age.

THOUGHTS: No personal thoughts today. I wish to share a true hero:
Dick and Rick Hoyt. Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheel chair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars--all in the same day. Dick has also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. on a bike.
This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs. "He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life;'' Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. "Put him in an institution.'' But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate. "No way,'' Dick says he was told.
"There's nothing going on in his brain.'' "Tell him a joke,'' Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a lot was going on in his brain. After a classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, "Dad, I want to do that.'' Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self- described "porker'' who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. "Then it was me who was handicapped,'' Dick says. " I was sore for two weeks.'' That day changed Rick's life. "Dad,'' he typed, " when we wererunning, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!''
And that sentence changed Dick's life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii. Dick does it purely for ``the awesome feeling'' he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together. This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time'? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992--only 35 minutes off the world record. Here's the video.... if you don't watch it, you will miss something VERY
special....Enter this URL in your browser and watch the video:
